Phase 1 – direct prevention of mortality and supporting the NHS and social care system

JCVI advises that the first priorities for the COVID-19 vaccination programme should be the prevention of mortality and the maintenance of the health and social care systems. As the risk of mortality from COVID-19 increases with age, prioritisation is primarily based on age.

The order of priority for each group in the population corresponds with data on the number of individuals who would need to be vaccinated to prevent one death, estimated from UK data obtained from March to June 2020

    1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers <– Everyone has been contacted
    2. all those 80 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    3. all those 75 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    4. all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable, all those shielding, frontline health and social care workers <– Everyone has been contacted
    5. all those 65 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    6. all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality and carers <– Everyone has been contacted
    7. all those 60 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    8. all those 55 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    9. all those 50 years of age and over <– Everyone has been contacted
    10. all those aged 45-49 years old <– Everyone has been contacted
    11. all those aged 40-44 years old <– Everyone has been contacted
    12. all those aged 38 and 39 <– Everyone has been contacted
    13. all those aged 25 – 37 <– Everyone has been contacted
    14. all those aged 23 – 24 <– Everyone has been contacted
    15. all those aged 21 – 22 <– Everyone has been contacted
    16. all those aged 18 – 20<– Everyone has been contacted

All those living with someone who is immunosuppressed <– Able to be booked for a vaccine

  • Household contacts considered as a priority would be those over 16 who share living accommodation with adults who are immunosuppressed.
  • The JCVI does not currently advise vaccination of household contacts of immunosuppressed children, or household contacts of immunosuppressed adults who are themselves children.

All patients who reach 8 weeks or more since their first vaccination are being called to book for their second vaccine.
